As Cassie Howard on the HBO hit series Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney's Barbie-blonde hair became a signature look for the character. Off-screen, we've seen the actress experiment with various hair colours – from buttery blonde to a more strawberry hue. But last night in Madrid, Sweeney stepped out with soft mermaid waves in a shade that's noticeably darker.
The transformation was first spotted at an appearance in London this week, where hairstylist Glen Coco Oropeza created a brunette chignon that was equal parts chic and fresh thanks to its lived-in texture and face-framing pieces.
But it's not the first time the actor's gone dark with her hair. According to Sweeney's Instagram stories, she's "back to my natural colour" and "entered OG Syd era", which means she's returning to her original shade. Brunettes are certainly having a moment, with Margot Robbie debuting a darker tone this autumn and Nicola Peltz-Beckham eschewing her golden lengths for a midnight hue.
What makes Sweeney's brunette tone so flattering and youthful is the richness and depth it contains. "There’s a difference between a good brunette and a bad brunette. It is to do with placement. We think about where the light shines and how to make it look natural and not going into red. It needs multi-dimension," said A-list colourist Zoë Irwin at a trends panel for John Frieda Salons. There's a gothic feeling in the air too, notes Irwin, referencing fashion label The Vampire's Wife as inspiration.
Always one to watch on the red carpet, Sweeney naturally paired her sophisticated loose waves with a vintage chartreuse Gianni Versace number which added contrast to her dark lengths. A style note we'll be taking this festive season.
