Olivia Colman Reveals Struggle Wikipedia Age

Olivia Colman has previously knocked back sexist and ageist questions by press following her recent Golden Globe win, and now the Oscar nominee has admitted she has battled with Wikipedia over her age after they added eight years on to it on her page.

The Favourite actress, who is 44 (and not 52), said she got in touch with the online free encyclopedia with a false name so as not to appear "vain". But when they didn't get back to her, she got in touch again and revealed her true identity.

Speaking to her Broadchurch co-star David Tennant on his new podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast With…, Colman recalled: "Once, on Wikipedia, they had my birthday as the wrong day, the wrong month, and eight years before I was born.

"I emailed them, pretending it wasn't me. [I wrote] 'I was at school with her and that's not her birthday'. I didn't want them to think I was being so vain."

Colman said it happened "years ago", and after not getting a reply to her first request, she got in touch again with the fake name.

"So I said, 'actually, this is me, and it's really upsetting me that you've made me eight years older than I actually am'," she recounted.

The Crown star said they got back to her but asked for a birth certificate to prove her real age, to which she replied: "'Whose f****** birth certificate have you looked at in the first place to make me eight years older?'"

The site finally amended her date of birth to 30 January 1974, with Colman joking that she should have said she was younger.

She also spoke to Tennant about her struggle with fame due to landing parts in high-profile films and TV series.

Colman added that it can feel "threatening" to lose her anonymity, and that she "can't cope" with being recognised in public - even though the people who recognise her are being "really nice".

But she concluded that she has no regrets, as "hand-in-hand with that, I'm getting work that I'm loving and always dreamt of".

Colman is nominated for a Leading Actress Oscar at this year's Academy Awards, taking place on Sunday, 25 February.
