Shiva Safai has more than a few strings to her bow. The entrepreneur (who set up her own criminal-background check business at a young age, which she ran for 10 years), has also enjoyed a successful modelling career, is engaged to Mohamed Hadid (the father of supermodel sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid), is a star of E!'s Second Wives Club and herself boasts almost 800,000 Instagram followers.
We caught up with Safai to discuss everything she has learnt about style, beauty, fitness, business and more.
On business
"Running your own business is not easy, that's for sure. You have to be prepared for failures because it won’t always work out the way you want in the first round. You need to be dedicated and you have to give up on social time with friends and give 110 per cent to your dream. It’s like a baby - you need to take care of it until it grows and can run on its own."
On style
"I would say that the biggest thing I have learnt about style is to invest in timeless pieces that I will be able to pull from my closet in 10 years time and still be able to wear. I'd rather do this than spend money on statement pieces that will go out of style in few months.
"I don’t have a stylist and I have never actually worked with one unless it was for a shoot. I usually dress according to my mood and how I feel. I think that, as I've grown older, I've become more confident and learnt to dress better for my body type, and while I do love to glam up every now and then, my everyday go-to is always jeans and T-shirt."
On fitness
"I’m lucky to have two brothers who own a gym and they always push me to come in and get a workout done. I try to do one-on-one personal training three times a week and one or two days of cardio in between. I don’t like to restrict myself from a lot of different foods, I'd rather have a bite of something I want or crave than not. I think moderation and portions are very important."
On beauty
"I have to thank my mother for her amazing genes – her skin and hair have always been flawless, but she also taught me to start taking care of my skin at a very young age. Protecting it from the sun is the number one thing to do to keep your skin looking youthful."
On marriage
"We haven’t planned anything for a wedding. I think we’ve both been so content in our relationship that it hasn’t been a priority in our lives. We like the idea of getting married one day but there’s no rush. I think I would like a small and intimate wedding, maybe somewhere in France.
"I don’t think I can look at anyone’s relationship and say I would like ours to be more like theirs. I like my relationship because of us – it just works for us and we are both so happy. It’s easy and effortless. I wouldn’t want to change anything about it."
On Gigi and Bella
"Seeing Mohamed’s daughters rise to their success has been an absolute honour and a heartwarming feeling. These girls have such an incredible work ethic and deserve all their success and so much more."
