Kamala Harris was greeted with an overwhelming wave of support this morning as she made her first public appearance since announcing her run for president.
The current vice president of the United States arrived to speak at an event honoring National Collegiate Athletic Association championship teams from the 2023–24 season, which took place on the South Lawn of the White House. As Harris walked out to the podium, she was welcomed with waves of cheers and applause, to which she flashed a wide, proud smile—one that would look good on our postage stamps.
The VP wore a smart black suit, draped white one-shoulder top, and black pumps for the occasion. She spoke at the event in President Joe Biden’s place, as he is currently recovering from COVID-19.
On Sunday, after weeks of mounting pressure from voters and from within his own Democratic Party, Biden announced he would be dropping out of the presidential race. In a moving statement, the 46th president expressed that while it has been his greatest honor to serve his country, he believes it is in “the best interest of my party and the country” to bow out of his reelection bid.
In a statement immediately following his announcement, Biden endorsed Harris for the job. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats—it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this,” Biden said.
Soon after, Harris announced that she will, indeed, be running, and said she is ready to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump and be our next president. “We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win,” she said in a statement.
