Katie Holmes is known for blending timeless elegance with a fashion-forward edge, which her new hairstyle effortlessly demonstrates.
At a Chanel dinner in New York City over the weekend, the actress looked suitably chic in a white lace blouse and black wide-legged trousers, but it was her new fringe that added an unexpected detail.
The cut, coined 'shadow bangs' by hair trend forecaster and stylist Tom Smith, has a blunt finish and eye-skimming length making it minimal in style and therefore very in-keeping with Holmes' signature. After a period of centre-parted 'curtain bangs' being the A-list look of choice (and, therefore, culturally significant), it seems she might become the poster girl for this new fringe trend.
“Fringes and bangs have truly become their own stand-alone category, and this fuller, blunt style of fringe has spent a while on the periphery of what is popular in face-framing styles, with softer more sweeping options pulling focus," Smith says. "The current growing presence of a full fringe is undeniable," he adds, "and shadow bangs show an edgier side of sultry" for those who like fringe benefits.
The hairstyle was all over New York Fashion Week this month, too. Seen across various shows, including Adeam, Proenzer Shouler and Rodarte, "bangs were all razor sharp and straight, often bolder and shorter and always very sleek," Smith notes.
Thankfully, it's the ideal style for autumn/winter, too, "which is one of the best times to wear a full fringe thanks to the cooler weather keeping hair worn on your face cleaner for longer".
Whether Holmes will adopt it beyond the season remains to be seen, especially given how synonymous her long-length haircut has been with her style for some time. But we're in no doubt that shadow bangs at large aren't a one-season wonder.
