Anna Kendrick has admitted that she firmly ruled out a potential Pitch Perfect 3 romantic storyline because she deemed it "f***ing problematic".
The 32-year-old actress - who reprises her role as Beca in the hit musical comedy - refused to have any romantic relationship with Guy Burnet's music executive Theo, because she already has an existing professional link with him when he attempts to recruit her as a solo artist.
"Originally the music executive was supposed by my romantic interest but I said no to that, because I thought that would be kind of fucking problematic," Kendrick told Harper's Bazaar UK.
But Kendrick said she even had to say no to an alternative version at the end which would have featured the characters kissing.
"I was like, 'Can no one else [see it]? Once I said it, everybody was like, 'I guess so,'" she recalled.
"And they still wanted to have a version at the end when we kissed, and I still said no."
The third instalment features Kendrick's Beca being singled out as the star of the Bellas after the cappella group reunite one last time for a singing competition at an overseas USO tour.
She's selected by Theo and DJ Khaled - providing a cameo as himself - to be the opening act of his upcoming tour as a solo act.
But Kendrick confessed that she was surprised that Beca was going to being heralded as the music star in the film, as her character had long held ambitions to become a top music producer.
"I was very surprised that they wanted to go that route but I have to admit I had to get talked into it a little bit," she continued.
"It was not what she ever wanted... From the beginning she wanted to be a producer, and so I was surprised that they wanted this artist storyline with her.
"But obviously we all just worked hard to make it work and make sense."
Kendrick also disclosed that she laughs off "notes from the top" requesting that their costumes be "tighter", "sexier" or "show more skin", because the film has nothing to do with their sex appeal.
"It's funny - whenever we do the wardrobe fittings I feel like we get notes from the top saying they should be tighter and sexier and show more skin," the actress added.
"And I'm like, that's not why people are coming to see the movie. They definitely aren't showing up because of our sex appeal."
"It's nice that audiences are interested in seeing a movie of misfits and girls of different shapes and sizes."
Pitch Perfect 3 is released in UK cinemas on December 20.
